My Work

Robert D Anderson and Me

Generally Mrs Anderson has not provided many photographs that would fit tot the festival, Nevertheless, his work is suitable and has inspired me to provide 2 different and opposed themes however taken as he did. By long exposure of the camera's shutter speed.

At first i wanted to capture Manchester at night and hence i was searching for places that i could capture the traffic of the cars. I intended to show the movement of the car lights over the time.

At first i went to the bridge near Parkway Gate. At the road under the bridge there are many cars and hence it was a suitable place of capturing the moving lights.  After capturing a series of photos i choose the best that were showing the moving lights.

This image has f/6.3 Exposure time 6 sec and ISO-100. Prior choosing the above image i captured numerous images however this is the most suitable for the festival. For concluding to this i took in mind the fact that i wanted to show the lights as well as the city. Everything in the image is stable however the cars ar keep moving and hence it can be said that their is a movement in the stable building and treas over time in Manchester.

Additional Images:

For my next selected image i was looking for the same elements. To show the movement of the car lights in the city o Manchester. Accordingly, in the day i was wandering around trying to find a good spot that would show a road with traffic at night. Hence, i found a road opposite a building that gad a nice view and a road that had traffic at night. I set my tripod and and waited for the right moment. Hence i capture the following image that would be suitable for the exhibition.

This image was taken from the balcony of an apartment. I used f/6.3 with exposure time 8 sec and ISO-100.

Additional Images

The following day i intended to do the same thing in a different place and hence i went to a friend apartment at W3. Once again i set my tripode and captured numerous images. Nevertheless i had to wait until 12 o clock in the night so that the lights of the buildings to go off. In response tot he festival i chose this image.

For this image i used f/6.3, exposure 10 sec and ISO-100.

Additional Image:

At this point of my work, i got the idea of showing the movement withing an image in an opposite environment. Mrs Anderson had provided work from a busy city at night And so i did. Nevertheless Mrs. Anderson is an inspiration of capturing the exact opposite. Hence that would be a day photograph in the nature, in a peaceful environment.

The movement can be shown by water and hence the image would again fit the subject of the exhibition.

On the other hand even if not inspired by Anderson he gave me the idea of providing three images of a night at a busy road that would have an opposite image of a peaceful environment in day, out of the city.

The movement in time as a subject can be seen by different ways.

  1.  First the movement of water and the movement of lights.
  2. The movement from nature to city
  3. The movement from night to day
  4. The difference between two places at the same time.
  5. The natural movement and the human made movement.
Therefore, as a part of my exhibited work i have chosen the following images.

f/22. Exposure time 2 sec, ISO-50

f/25, Exposure time 1/2 sec, ISO-100

f/22, Exposure time 1.3 sec, ISO-100

The above three images were shot by me at summer. They fit well to the exhibition and they reflect to my intention of showing the differences that i mentioned above. Additionally, it is an opportunity to show to a wider range of people my work in landscapes.

By providing those six photographs i satisfy my inspiration from Robert d Anderson, the subject of the festival and my individual contribution to the festival as practitioner and participant, by showing a wider form of my work interpreted with the subject matter.

Roberd D Anderson

Robert d Anderson is n Australian photographer who now lives in London. Within his numerous works in his archive, a series of photos named London light trial is included since February 2013.

For capturing the pictures of the series he was wandering all over London with the intention of shooting the motion of the light of the cars and buses. In order to achieve the light trails he was looking for places with lots of traffic and moving lights with a nice background. Hence, once he spotted the right places he placed his tripod and waited for the right moment to click. Additionally, he set the shutter speed from 10 to 25 sec, f stop between f13 to f22 and with ISO 200.

This series was the first attempt of Robert d Anderson, however his choices of places and camera settings resulted to interesting and well quality photographs. More specifically, a nice photograph is that of the moving bus in front of the Big Ben. The upper and the lower lights gave a more interesting approach in the night view of the historical building and showed the combination of the pass of time and the stability of the historical buildings through time. By doing this he also added another dimension an gave a more unrealistic view of the image.

In another picture of his, he captured the moving cars in the Westminster Bridge. Again he achieved to marry the historical place with the development of time. The moving lights of the cars might well represent the moving time and even if he did not intent to give this impression, me as a viewer I have those thoughts. By, capturing a historical place in such a nice and different way his not only modernize and gives life to the theme but also shows the beauty of the architecture.

He did not provided many photographs from different places, nevertheless, he provided different points of views of the same places. This was due to the fact that he seeks to capture the traffic lights and as the night passes there no many places that those elements are met. His work may be considered as inspirational and it promotes the beauty and the history of London. This kind of photography may well be use for galleries as well as advertising.

Generally he has not produced many photographs for this subject however; his work inspired me to do the same thing in Manchester. Capturing the moving lights of the traffic lights of Manchester is a subject suitable not only for galleries in Manchester but also internationally as it promotes the city.

Moreover, it could also represent the subject of our group.  As a group we had to prepare photographs with the theme of time and movement and hence we concluded that capturing this king of subject as Mr. Robert, would fit as well as represent our theme.

Movement in Time Festival

The impact of the international market in photographic practice:

International market has included photography mostly by the international exhibitions and competitions. Year after year the publicity of such event has grown and hence their promotion has been developed.

Nowadays, there are many ways of promoting such events and this is done by advertising though photographic magazines, art forums, and other areas that a practitioners would usually use. Hence the internet had a major role to the expansion of the participation in the exhibitions.

Additionally there are now numerous communities and and agents responsible for the advertisement and creation of international exhibitions and competitions.

Creating such an exhibition gives great opportunities but gives great responsibilities to the organizers. This is because they have to consider their budged the place of the exhibition the advertisement, their expenses, the way that the exhibition would be viewed, the subject and the number participation.

  • In response to the above we were asked to create an international event of photography.
Hence after getting into groups we had to consider the subject matter of our exhibition. Respectively we decided to create the Movement in Time Festival.

As a group we had to act as both the organizers and participants and hence we had to consider all the elements of creating a succeeding festival but also of providing suitable images for the festival.

The first step was to consider all the elements that were discussed in class:

  1. Location
  2. What gallery
  3. Floor plan
  4. Selling prints
  5. Logo
  6. Sponsors
  7. Promotion
  8. Facebook
  9. Twitter
  10. Website
  11. Interaction
  12. Somebody famous/important to open the festival?
  13. Cost
  14. Profit?

In response to the Location we wanted a place that would reflect to the subject matter of the festival. consequently we wanted a place full of movement and worldwide known. Hence we decided to search for a gallery in New York. thought our research of potential places we concluded that a suitable place would be Powerhouse Arena. This area is combined by two floors where each room would present the photographs of a participant.

Within our discussions and as demonstrated in our presentation, we consider all the elements (lighting, framing, size)  on the way that the images would be exhibited.

Our logo is responding to the name of the festival and therefore we prepare an image of a clock with out number and instead of indicators, the words of "MOVEMENT N TIME"

In regard to the participants, we wanted to set a goal to the festival that would bring together known and new practitioners concerned with the subject matter.

Our Leaflets were delighted to response to the logo of the festival and hence we created a two side paper in circle shape. In the frond site there is the name of the participants as well as the logo the name and the location of the festival. On the other site there is a plan showing the rooms that each participant will exhibit their work.

For our sponsors we decided that it would be good to include world known companies. Additionally, their services and goods would be concerned with such an event. Consequently we choose the companies:

  1. Canon
  2. Sony
  3. Virgin Atlantic
  4. The New York Times
  5. Abc
  6. Jagermeister
Each company is related with the festival for instance Canon for the cameras, Virgin Atlantic for the flight to New York, and the New York Times for the advertisement of the exhibition.

Regarding the promotion we decided that the internet would be the most effective way. Hence we created a website for the event as well as used social websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

A big consideration for the organizers, is the costs and the profits of such an event. Hence we had to consider the costs of the whole event and from where we would get money. The following image is showing the costs and profits as explained in the presentation.

Following the part of us being the creators of the festival, we had to provide work as participants to the festival. Hence we were asked to find a practitioner already having work suitable for the exhibition and also able to inspire us. Therefore each of us had find a practitioner.

Research

International Markets and Photography

The meaning of international Market:

According to the American Marketing Association, “International Marketing is the multi-national process of planning and executing the conception, prices, promotion and distribution of ideal goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy the individual and organizational objectives.”[1]

Based on the above definition, it can be said that the international market is the introduction of goods from the individual or from a community, to the whole world. Hence, it is not only an introduction of new things but also the exchanging of ideas, ethics, traditions, and goods.

Having an international market has both positive and negative effects to many aspects that are related and affected by its existence. In regard to the positives, it is well understood that it gives to the public the chance of having more choices in a better price and it gives the ability to the sellers to promote their products or services to a wider market and hence to have a bigger income and recognition.  In relation to the negatives in can be said that it gives the chance only to rich companies to be part of the market and hence to slowly diminish small markets that were traditionally operated to a certain area. Therefore, in some situations, the small markets, which were previously parts of the traditions of an area or nation, are now replaced by the rich and international markets.

Despite the above, having an international market is a positive thing and as seen through the years it’s development is rapidly growing and is now more competitive than ever.

International Market and Photography:

It was unquestionable that within the development of the international market, the area of photography would be included. By being a part of this market, the art of photography has been expanded as different cultures new methods and practices has arisen and combined and consequently thought the international market the photography practice has developed and expanded.

The production of photography was surely impacted by the international market and trends and this can be seen through the numerous international exhibitions and competitions. Year after year the publicity of them is getting bigger and the participation is larger by both known and new practitioners.

Hence, the international market is giving opportunities to new photographers, it also helps to the rise of hidden talents and new techniques, finally it promotes the photographic practice and it give the chance to the practitioners to explore new ways of photography. Therefore it can be said that the internal market is a source of inspiration for both new and old practitioners.

One of the hardest questions for me is whether photography is a development of art or technology. As seen through the development of photography, the practitioners were inspired by the need of their current life time and their work was firstly the result of their goal to create something that an artist could not paint and this was aimed by the painters themselves. Consequently, those efforts led to experimentation and resulted to the rise of new methods of photographing as well as painting.[2]

  • How does photography operate in different political climates?

Each practitioner is coming from regions with different political climates. By having an internal market, a practitioner could show those difference through their photography. Hence nowadays, more and more photographers are aiming to capture and to show to world the aspect of this subject. This means that photography in the international market is operating as sharing and expanding the nature of a political climate as well as motivation for exploring them and sharing them.

On the other hand a political climate is differing from time to time hence talking about this subject could mean the way that photography is compatible and operates under the different political climates of each period. The development of photography has been influence by both art and technology however though time it was shown that the practitioners were interested in different subject matters. Nevertheless, at this point, because there as so many different climates occurring at the same time in different places of the world, a practitioner could operate differently in accordance with his area of practice. This can be shown though war photography, of photojournalism.  This ability of choices is the result of having an international market.

  • How do geographical differences impact on photographic practice?

Surely, each place of the world is different. Not only as a matter of nature but also as a matter of population, development and area. Hence each place can offer different things and subjects to a photograph. Additionally, in response to the geographical differences, a photograph has to comply with the elements available in a certain region. it is hard to look for nature within a city and it is impossible to capture the city life in Sahara. Consequently having the international market is offering to the practitioner the chance to see different aspects of photography and also to be influenced by practitioners living in a similar environment.

The Operation of Photographic Practice in the International Market:

Photography became a part of the international market mostly though the international exhibitions and galleries. Both the practitioners and the public is having the chance to see different ways of practicing and techniques and to see new different subjects and meet new cultures though photography. The international market has also accomplish to bring together practitioners all over the world and more specifically though the exhibitions with certain subject the practitioners concerned with it have the ability to meet and to be influenced by each other.

Giving a certain subject to an exhibition is automatically shows the different ways that it can be translated and executed by each practitioner all over the world. Hence all the elements that are affecting a photograph ( geographical area, political climates, traditions etc) are giving the ability to create an international exhibition with the same subject but with a different translation and influences.
